Italian Negativity Towards Online Casino Gambling Changes
4 Oct 2006

Winds of change are blowing through Europe once again, but this time the wind is shifting in the direction of online casino gambling. Italy, once a fierce objector to online casino operations, has had a change of heart and the Italian government is expected to allow Italian citizen to play poker and online casino games legally, starting January 1st. This comes as quite a surprise when thinking back on the sanctions that the Italian government imposed on foreign online casino sites in the past.

In February of this year, the Italian authorities blocked the IPs of some 600 online casino operators in an attempt to stop Italian citizens from gambling at online casino sites. After further consideration and evaluation of the potential that the online gambling industry is posing, the Italian government will adopt an approach similar to the one promoted by the United Kingdom. Online casino firms will operate under a regulatory system, and will be taxed according to their business.

This move means that the online casino industry becomes a part of Italy's economy, and the government enjoys a share of the profit by taxing it. This is the direction that the United Kingdom is promoting, and with Italy joining in, we can only hope that other countries will follow. With the anti online casino bill expected to fail in Congress, there is still hope that the United States will change its approach towards online gambling, and maybe even adopt a similar system.
