Philippino Authorities Target Online Casino 11 May 2006 Politicians in the Philippines have taken drastic measures to address the increase in underage gamblers playing at the online casino. A resolution urging police, local government units and operators of online casinos to strictly enforce laws relating to underage gambling has been issued. The rise in underage gambling was brought to the government’s attention by a recent study, which showed that 85 percent of students had tried some form of gambling in the past year, including gaming at the online casino. The new House Resolution 1214 was filed after school authorities issued a report to the government stating that parental concern over gambling activity had reached a crescendo. Gambling at online casinos is illegal in the Philippines but this doesn’t seem to deter thousands of Philippino casino players from trying their luck at online casinos each day. The government is obviously concerned about the increase in gambling at online casinos, but is determined to tackle underage gambling first. A recent government report stated that "if treated with indifference, gambling activities may interfere with a student's personal relationships, school or work activities, and they may even incur debts of substantial amounts due to addiction.” The government has also accused the online casinos industry of turning a blind eye to underage gambling. Several popular online casinos have denied this, pointing to the strict controls they impose upon members as evidence of their concern | |||||
